Visitor Visa (Tourism) for Canada

What is a Visitor Visa (TRV)?

A Visitor Visa is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that is placed in your passport. It indicates that you meet the requirements for temporary entry into Canada. Most visitor visas are issued for multiple entries, allowing you to enter and leave Canada repeatedly for up to 10 years, or until one month before your passport expires, whichever comes first. Each stay is typically authorized for up to six months.

Key Requirements for a Visitor Visa

To be eligible for a Visitor Visa, you must satisfy an immigration officer that you:

  • Have a valid travel document, like a passport.

  • Are in good health (a medical exam might be required).

  • Have no criminal or immigration-related convictions.

  • Have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada and for your return journey. The amount depends on the length of your stay and whether you will be staying with family or in paid accommodation.

  • Have strong ties to your home country (e.g., job, family, financial assets, property) that will ensure you return after your visit.

  • Will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

  • May also need a letter of invitation from a Canadian host if you are visiting friends or family.

Super Visa for Parents and Grandparents

The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visitor visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. What makes it special? It allows the holder to stay in Canada for up to five consecutive years per entry, without needing to renew their status, and is valid for a period of up to 10 years. It's a perfect solution for extended visits, offering peace of mind for families.

Super Visa Eligibility

For a parent or grandparent to be eligible for a Super Visa, several criteria must be met by both the applicant and the inviting child or grandchild in Canada:

Criteria for the applicant (parent or grandparent):

  • Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

  • Be admissible to Canada (not have an inadmissibility for health or security reasons, for example).

  • Undergo an immigration medical examination.

  • Have purchased private Canadian medical insurance valid for at least one year from the date of entry, with a minimum coverage of $100,000 for healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation.

  • Intend to leave Canada at the end of the authorized stay.

Criteria for the inviting child or grandchild in Canada:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.

  • Be at least 18 years old and reside in Canada.

  • Provide a signed invitation letter that includes:

    • A promise of financial support for the duration of the visit.

    • A list and number of people in their household.

    • A copy of their Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document.

  • Demonstrate that they meet the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO), meaning they have sufficient income to support their family, including the invited parents or grandparents. Proof of income (Notice of Assessment, employment records, bank statements, etc.) will be required.

Why Choose the Super Visa?

  • Extended Stays: Unlike standard visitor visas (usually 6 months), the Super Visa allows stays of up to 5 years per entry.

  • Multiple Entries: Facilitates repeated trips to Canada over a period of up to 10 years.

  • Fewer Administrative Hassles: Reduces the need to frequently renew visas or apply for extensions of stay.

Business Visitor Visa to Canada

If you're planning to visit Canada for business activities without entering the Canadian labour market, the Business Visitor Visa is the appropriate stream. This visa is designed for individuals who intend to engage in international business activities, such as attending meetings, conferences, or conducting short-term training. At SAMA Avocat, we understand the nuances of business travel and offer expert guidance to ensure your visa application is seamless and successful.

What Qualifies as a Business Visitor?

A business visitor typically:

  • Does not intend to enter the Canadian labour market. This means you won't be employed by a Canadian company or directly competing with Canadian workers for jobs.

  • Comes to Canada to engage in international business activities. This can include:

    • Attending business meetings, conferences, conventions, or trade shows.

    • Taking orders for goods or services.

    • Buying Canadian goods or services for a foreign company.

    • Giving or receiving training from a Canadian branch of a foreign company (or vice-versa).

    • Attending training to learn about equipment or services purchased from a Canadian company.

It's crucial to differentiate a business visitor from a business person under free trade agreements (like CUSMA/NAFTA), or a worker who requires a work permit. Business visitors generally get paid from outside Canada, and their primary place of business and source of income remain outside Canada.

Key Requirements for a Business Visitor Visa

To be eligible for a Business Visitor Visa, applicants must generally meet the requirements for a regular temporary resident visa (TRV) and provide additional documentation specific to their business purpose. Key requirements include:

  • Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

  • Proof of Funds: Demonstrate you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay and for your return.

  • Ties to Home Country: Show strong ties to your home country (e.g., family, property, employment) to convince the visa officer that you will return.

  • Letter of Invitation (if applicable): A detailed letter from the Canadian host company or organization outlining the purpose of your visit, the duration, and confirming their awareness of your visit.

  • Letter from Employer: A letter from your foreign employer stating the purpose of your trip, confirming your employment, and indicating that your employer will cover your expenses or that you have the financial means.

  • Itinerary: A clear itinerary of your business activities in Canada.

  • No Intent to Work: Clear evidence that you do not intend to enter the Canadian labour market.
